My first job
When I was 15 Mum looked for a job in the paper and saw "Apprentice"
required. She thought "That's a good idea, lets get him into an
apprenticeship", a respectable job, well nearly....
It is of course amusing because I got
the job as an
apprentice safe cracker. I had no idea that it was what it was until I became
aware of the skills I was being taught. I could not understand why I had
to get through windows and watch as he taught me with practical examples of
how to open safes and get money out. I told Grandpa and he called the
police and eventually the nasty man was caught and imprisoned.
I think I'm still on the database as "Fingers", may be they'd like to hire
me with one of their persuaders. Its an oblong square thing with a hole
in the end that chucks metal at you, if you get in the way.
It was quite amusing because some time ago a clerk was accidentally locked in a
time locked safe and she could not have been released for three days over the
weekend so a plea was put out to the country for fingers to help. I
volunteered and knowing the type I took a special kit. It only took a minute
for the safe to unlock itself and open on its powerful motors then the naked
lady skipped out into the hands of the rescue team. I then used my tool to
lock up. It was another few days before the safe could be undone. I never
told how but they know now, it was a pretty weak design. It was such a high
security safe that oxyacetylene cutters would have taken days to cut through.
Even gelignite would have been unsafe and would only jam the lock. Thermite
is the usual one now, depending on the target inside. However I don't do it
as a profession as stealing in wrong and I never have taken any money. My
skills were used by the government.
I once found the whole account of the Los Alamos project some one had
illegally and passed it to the police to be properly stored.
